About the SSN
The Deakin Science and Society Network supports science-literate social research and socially-engaged science that makes an impact. It aspires to be an engine for interdisciplinary collaboration at Deakin. Our purpose is to
- Promote and facilitate inter-, trans- and cross-disciplinary research throughout the university and in alignment with Deakin University and National research goals and strategic plans
- Support the development of EMCRs and create a supportive environment for HDRs engaged in interdisciplinary work
- Promote a collaborative research culture throughout the university by initiating, developing, implanting and monitoring mechanisms to support inter-, trans- and cross-disciplinary research
We run an internal interdisciplinary grants programme; the SSN seminar programme, and a yearly flagship event on Emerging Issues in Science and Society (EISS). From 2026, the SSN will be organised by five streams aligning with the National Science and Research Priorities
- Building a secure and resilient nation
- Elevating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge systems
- Protecting and restoring Australia’s environment
- Supporting healthy and thriving communities
- Transitioning to a net zero future
For descriptions of the research themes visit the Department of Industry, Science and Resources website.

- Suggest themes and speakers for our annual flagship event ‘Emerging Issues in Science and Society’
- Take part in mentoring and supporting grantholders in your faculty and stream
- Act as liaison between your faculty and the SSN
