Development of a novel cell-based screening tool to reduce the impact of bowel cancer across the community

Bowel cancer kills – but not if we detect it early. The current screening test detects blood in faeces and is far from perfect. Not everyone with early-stage cancers has bleeding, and blood is not always due to cancer. We will collaborate with health professionals to consult with the community to co-design the concept of cell-based bowel cancer screening to identify the feasibility and sociocultural factors that will facilitate the movement from the current method for bowel screening in Australia, to cell-based screening method. We aim to ultimately save lives through earlier detection, reduce unnecessary, invasive tests and surgical removal of early-stage bowel cancers.
